September/October 2020 Vintage Truck
/The September/October 2020 issue of Vintage Truck magazine is available in our gift shop now and will be available on newsstands soon. Our cover story about National Parts Depot’s unrestored 1971 Ford F-250 was written by Robert Gabrick and photographed by Mark Dalton and Brad Bowling.
The fifth generation of Ford’s F-series ran from model year 1967 through 1972, and the company continued to emphasize that its light-duty pickups “work like trucks … ride like cars.” Its F-100, F-250, and F-350 did not trade comfort for capability, though, with maximum gross vehicle weight ratings of 5,000, 7,500, and 10,000 pounds, respectively. The F-100 and F-250 were offered in Styleside and Flareside pickups and chassis-cabs, and only the F-250 had a stakes option. F-100 and F-250 models offered two- and four-wheel-drive layouts. F-350 trucks were available as Flareside pickups and single- or dual-rear wheel stakes and chassis-cabs.
Laying claim to leadership of the recreational vehicle (RV) market, Ford heralded its Camper Specials as “Fun Loving.” According to the ’71 Pickups by Ford sales brochure, the F-250 Camper Special with the 8-foot pickup box was designed to carry 11-foot slide-in or chassis-mounted campers. The Camper Specials were also said to provide from the factory everything necessary for economical and reliable transport with all anticipated utility, comfort, and convenience equipment. Ford also offered an optional 110/120-volt, 2,500-watt Electric Power Pak to provide electric current. The Power Pak was driven by its own 5 1/2hp air-cooled engine.
