November/December 2020 Vintage Truck
/The November/December 2020 issue of Vintage Truck magazine is available in our gift shop now and will be available on newsstands soon. Our cover story about Terry Drury’s 1967 Dodge D-100 CSS was written by Loren Hoekema and photographed by Brad Bowling.
When Terry Drury first saw our featured blue 1967 Dodge D-100 in Minden, Nebraska, in 1997, he did not believe it was stock. “That is a really unusual interior,” he thought. “Someone must have customized it and added the bucket seats and center console.” Little did he realize that he was looking at a Custom Sports Special (or CSS)—one of the most collectible trucks Dodge ever produced.
In the early 1960s, the general populace was just beginning to buy pickup trucks to use as “second cars” or maybe with slide-in camper units that were also gaining in popularity. Dodge was struggling to hold onto its traditional third place in the light-duty truck market and needed to broaden its appeal in this growing “personal use” segment. The trend in upscale passenger cars at the time was to equip them with bucket seats, a console, and some other sporty features, so why not do the same for a pickup?
Dodge brought to life its “factory custom” pickup idea with a prototype that debuted in the August 1963 issue of Car Life magazine. After conducting a successful marketing test in California, Dodge management offered the Custom Sports Special for the 1964 model year.
