Donna Sanders’ 1947 Studebaker Coupe Express has enjoyed a long second life!
World War II was becoming an increasingly smaller image in history’s rear-view mirror in 1947, and, with the overwhelming postwar demand for new cars and trucks, facelifted prewar models represented the order of the day.
Earning high marks for its WWII production efforts, The Studebaker Corp. of South Bend, Indiana, returned to the civilian market in 1946, offering only the slightly refreshed Champion passenger car (based on the company’s short-lived 1942 model) and the essentially unchanged M-series truck, which had been introduced in 1941. Studebaker had credited Raymond Loewy, the “star stylist,” with giving its 1942 Champion, President, and Commander “Skyway Styling” that featured the “flight-streamed contours of the latest model pursuit planes.” Studebaker repeated this futuristic, aviation-based theme when production began for the abbreviated 1946 model year.
