Made to Order for the Long Haul

Paul Johnson’s 1969 International 1000D Travelall Custom is a low-mile original!

Some folks only buy something if it is specially made for them. Be it a finely tailored suit or a bespoke motor vehicle tailored to their whims, they feel a custom order is the only way to go. This practice beats buying something off the rack, in-stock, and ready to purchase. The first owner of Paul Johnson’s unrestored 1969 IHC Travelall was just such a buyer.

Our featured Travelall represents the inaugural model year of what proved to be International’s final generation of light-duty trucks. Before the 1969–75 generation that IHC called the “Light Line,” the company’s light-duty truck family was based on a cab structure that dated to 1957 and had enjoyed only some hit-and-miss trim shuffling and regulatory changes. IHC needed an all-new design if it was to have any hope of building light-truck sales. The 1969 D-series delivered in spades with a fresh new design. (IHC’s model naming convention at this time used four digits for the weight range prefix ahead of the letter series, hence the basic half-ton was the 1000D.) Not only did Ted Ornas’ clean-sheet, squared-off, Scout-like design look new and fresh then compared to its biggest rivals from Ford and GM, but it still pleases the eye today. Had IHC not elected to leave the light-duty market in 1975, the Light Line would have looked competitive in styling to the Big Three full-sized pickup competitors into the 1980s.
